James has extensive experience across the private and public sectors, including residential and commercial mixed-use projects, and has specific expertise in retail planning.

James has extensive experience across the private and public sectors, including residential and commercial mixed-use projects, and has specific expertise in retail planning and town centre strategies.

He has provided advice on development sites across the UK, with a particular focus on London. As a result of this work, he has gained detailed knowledge of the planning process and managing multi-disciplinary teams for residential and commercial developments.

He also has significant experience utilising GIS analysis for the production of studies and capacity modelling based around household survey findings, and is well versed in the production of retail impact assessments, retail audits, studies and strategies for local planning authorities, including as Expert Witness at appeal and Examination in Public.

James has been interviewed for a televised roundtable panel discussion on strategies for the future of retailing and the High Street, and was invited to participate in the British Property Federation Futures’ High Street Challenge, where his pitch for a town centre strategy won the audience award and was shortlisted as a finalist.

His recent clients include YPP Investments, DoubleTree by Hilton, Travelodge, Marks & Spencer, Lidl, New River REIT and BNP Paribas Real Estate.

James has also advised several local authority clients, including Crawley, Newport, Northampton, Tunbridge Wells, Huntingdonshire, Bolsover, Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Wakefield, Bassetlaw and Ashfield, as well as Mid Ulster and Fermanagh & Omagh in Northern Ireland.

James is a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.
