Sutton High School, Sutton Borough Council

Nexus Planning was appointed by the Girls’ Day School Trust to support a wider masterplan of improvements to Sutton High School. The improvements included an extension to the existing refectory building, an infill extension to the existing junior school building, a new two-storey prep school extension, new sports changing rooms’ facilities and the creation of a new multi-use games area.

The alterations constituted a series of strategic improvements that would enhance the school’s learning and sports facilities, address existing spatial constraints, improve the well-being of the pupils at the school and increase the schools’ capacity in order to meet local demand.

Our Solutions

The project was complex due to its close proximity to residential dwellings, which required comprehensive consultation prior to submission and during the determination period.

The proposed loss of sports facilities on site also resulted in extensive pre-application with Sport England being carried out.

Due to the constrained nature of the site and nature of the application (which included the replacement of a playing field with and AstroTurf Pitch) the policy requirements for Urban Greening Factor (UGF) were unable to be met. This led to comprehensive negotiation with the Council’s Biodiversity Officer to come to a suitable compromise.

The Outcome

Resolution to grant was secured at Committee in May 2021 and a decision issued in July 2021 following the completion of a S.106 agreement to secure highways works.
Nexus is now working with Sutton High School to deliver Phase 3 of the project which includes a new Sixth Form Centre and temporary teaching accommodation at the site.
