SMALLBROOK, BIRMINGHAM
We were appointed by CEG to prepare and submit a planning application for a large regeneration scheme in the heart of Birmingham City Centre. The Site comprised a range of dilapidated 1960s office buildings, including retail space and nightclubs, which no longer met the needs of the area.
Our Solutions
The development was challenged at the outset by viability considerations, requiring an optimised design solution for both the residential and commercial elements. The buildings were also locally listed as non-designated heritage assets. In response, we prepared a detailed socio-economic assessment to demonstrate how the benefits of the development outweighed any perceived disadvantages.
We were engaged in extensive pre-application discussions with the Council and organised and managed public consultation events. We also worked closely with key stakeholders, including CABE and local heritage and community groups.
In addition to being responsible for the planning strategy and co-ordinating the application, we put together an Design and Access Statement in order to bolster the planning case further.
The Outcome
The application has been approved and will enable the delivery of a vibrant development which will create new job opportunities, homes and retail and leisure space close to the city centre.
