ONE ANGEL SQUARE, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
We were appointed by Northamptonshire County Council to negotiate planning permission from Northampton Borough Council for a new headquarters designed by BDP and Latham Architects. The development comprised 21,500 sqm of accommodation and included a café, undercroft parking and space for related commercial uses. The development required a particularly careful design solution given its historic town centre location and status as a significant local landmark.
Our Solutions
Following a detailed pre-application programme, we prepared and submitted a strategic planning application on behalf of Northamptonshire County Council. This involved organising a public exhibition, neighbourhood consultation events and regular meetings with Officers and Members at Northampton Borough Council. As a result of this extensive engagement, we ensured that the submission process was conducted in an efficient and resourceful manner.
Significant operational efficiencies will be achieved for the County Council by relocating staff from disparate locations into a central, high quality and energy efficient building. It is also estimated that the building will be a significant boost to Northampton’s economy. The scheme has formed a vital part of the Northampton Alive regeneration programme and has provided the foundation of a wider strategic vision for the town centre.
The Outcome
Resolution to grant permission was granted 10 weeks after submission. The building was completed and formally opened in October 2017 by Communities Secretary Sajid Javid.
