Homes for London’s Firefighters granted permission
30th September 2019
On behalf of London Fire Brigade, we have secured planning and listed building approval to provide new homes for London’s firefighters. Located in West Hampstead, the development will restore and bring back to beneficial use a row of Grade II listed cottages behind the main Fire Station.
A two stage approach was taken – making the case that the cottages were ancillary to the fire station, before then negotiating the balance between preserving their heritage significance and accommodating the needs of modern firefighters.
As well as ensuring the cottages’ future heritage value, the development will make a meaningful contribution to housing some of the capital’s key workers where they are needed in one of the city’s more expensive areas.
The development had support from the London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden (Andrew Dismore) – ‘that the scheme provides an ideal solution for key worker housing and to bringing the cottages back into use’.
