Tuesday 13 March in review - MIPIM 2018
14th March 2018
Tuesday 13 March saw the opening of the Palais and the start of the official programme for MIPIM 2018.
Cheshire and Warrington LEP held a breakfast event covering an important subject that perhaps wouldn’t traditionally have been covered at MIPIM – energy. An interesting debate centred around the pioneering development of private energy networks and the Energy Innovation District, which has seen a cluster of technologies and industries emerge.
Meetings over coffee throughout the morning included Infinite Global and Town Solicitors followed by lunch with Skanska, WSP and Broadway Malyan.
Justin Cove attended the Place North West opening reception, before returning to the Palais to hear more about the Northern Gateway and the important role that transport and infrastructure delivery has if northern cities are to succeed.
Wine tastings are a feature of MIPIM 2018 and we attended very enjoyable events as guests of Building Services Design and Morgan Sindall.
Amanda Balson attended the UK Government debate on retail in the digital age - “Physical + digital = phygital” which included contributions from Sophie Ross of Hammerson, Mark Williams of Hark Group, Philip Lunn of Lateral Property and Adrian Griffiths of Chapman Taylor. They concluded that in this increasingly digital age “retail outlets will become media outlets” and that “shopping remains the 2nd most popular social activity”.
Estates Gazette hosted event considering exactly what makes UK Cities attractive, with civic leaders from the regions explaining the steps they’ve taken to attract investment and promote their unique cultural identities.
An entertaining Reception at the London Stand was followed by the exemplar Vectos Dinner held to celebrate Mike Axon’s 1,800 km cycle from Leeds to MIPIM 2018, which was a fantastic way to end the day and a great chance to mix with other attendees and catch up on everything that had happened on a busy first day at MIPIM.
