Since 2013 we have worked with the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames to deliver Village Planning Guidance Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) for eleven of the fourteen village areas that define the Borough. The SPDs complement the existing village plan process, which identifies local priorities and actions, by establishing local planning policy and consultation-driven design guidance, ensuring that planning priorities of residents are embedded into the Council’s Planning Policy Framework.
Working with conservation specialists, we undertook detailed character assessments of the village areas. This involved recognising patterns of architectural similarity, determining key features such as materials, features, design typologies and streetscape and identifying key facilities, accessibility and green infrastructure. The process included extensive community input through drop-in events and community walkabouts, enabling residents to provide their views through informal feedback and questionnaires.
The SPDs have now been formally adopted by the Council.
