We were commissioned by Ashfield District Council to undertake a Retail and Leisure Study for the District of Ashfield to contribute to the preparation of their Local Plan.
The Study delivered an appraisal of the retail and leisure needs within the District of Ashfield, as well as a review of the area’s capacity. In doing so, we reviewed the current performance of the main town centres and shopping centres across the District.
Based on the findings of the report, we formulated a series of recommendations and future policy strategies aimed at delivering the most appropriate mix of town centre uses. We provided detailed guidance on the potential of the District’s centres to meet the needs of the surrounding areas, as well as identifying future development opportunities for allocation. In addition, we advised on the setting of a local threshold for considering the impact of out-of-centre retail planning applications on existing centres.
In formulating the Study’s key recommendations, we worked closely with a number of stakeholder groups to ensure the Study was as comprehensive and widely supported as possible. This included liaising with chambers of trade, town centre managers, key Council Officers and Officers of neighbouring authorities.
As a result, our guidance formed the foundation of the Council’s retail and leisure strategy for the immediate plan period.
